Edible Lasers

Post by Din »

Fred always wanted completely non-toxic, edible substances to process silver. I suggested it might be possible, since the important parameter for developers and fixers is pH; orange juice is acidic and so could be used for fixers.

Now, the laser itself can be made from non-toxic food: https://phys.org/news/2025-07-edible-mi ... rials.html. Certain oils can be made to lase with the addition of chlorophyll to provide optical gain. In fact, olive oil already contains chlorophyll, and so can be made to lase without any additions to invert the population:

"Researchers have shown that olive oil already contains enough chlorophyll to be used directly as a laser in the form of droplets without the need for additional ingredients. They can be excited using external light, such as a pulsed laser. The research is published in the journal Advanced Optical Materials."
