Multiplex Holograms

Post by sulfurict »

Hello all :)
I am a video artist, who was recently blown away by learning about the work of Lloyd Cross and Shannon McCormack. I am very attracted to the possibility of animation, and the the curved surface of the holograms. I find there to be so much creative potential in this form of making, and was especially inspired by the collaborations of Cross with dancer Simone Forti.
I would love to be able to 'print' some animations from my footage this way, and I started looking in to what it could take. I was so grateful at how free the information has been made regarding the creation of Multiplex Holograms, but I am afraid that they are technical beyond my means and understanding.
I did see that several variations of 'Mark' printers were developed by Cross, and I became curious where these machines have ended up, and if any of them are still in use. Does anyone here know? I would be very curious to learn. I would also appreciate any help in bringing this medium closer to my use, whether that be demystification or practical pointers... I don't have the fattest wallet, but I would be very interested in commissioning this type of work from someone, too. Looking forward to hearing back about this.

If you’re ok with something flat rather than curved, I might be able to help you. Holorez.com.

Otherwise, Hart Perry might have a functional Multiplex printer in upstate NY. You can reach him at hartperryfilms@gmail.com. You can use my name if it helps (see my website).

If you just want to try, check "holographic printers":

https://www.ultimate-holography.com/chimera
I am not sure what input they accept; I'd expect a digital 3-D model or a series of images. In the latter case, animation should be easily possible.
The prints are not cheap, though.

However, if you want to invest your time and money to make your own holographic printer, you'll end up with much higher price, and years of your time to make it really good. And perhaps you may find out that it is not good enough. Thus, as you are an artist: if you are deeply interested in the technology, definitely invest some considerable money to state-of-the-art prints such as the ones I have mentioned, and then decide what next.

If you are in the Los Angeles area, we may be able to help demystify you about holography. Lobaz is quite right about the cost of setting up a decent studio/lab, but, to get your feet wet, you just need a hundred dollars or so, eg a 2 ft square metal block, about an inch thick, freely and cheaply available at a metal junk store ( I think we have one of those in storage somewhere), and a solid floor, eg a garage or a self storage location with a cement floor. We no longer have a holographic studio, but have lots of our equipment and film in storage, more than enough to help you get started if you can find a suitable location. We have usually taught for free or for a few hundred dollars. If the holographic bug bites (as it has bitten so many here on these pages!) and you want a real artist studio, it will set you back perhaps a few thousands dollars at least. The most expensive item used to be lasers, but holomaker, one of our members, sells these for reasonable prices. Explanation of holography - demystification - is usually free, but recipients sometimes throw in a decent bottle of Merlot (everyone here knows of my fondness for Merlot :D )

Greetings
I can also print commission digital holograms at a reasonable cost, see some examples on my YouTubbe channel here:
