Jim Trolinger

Post by Din »

I just heard of the passing of Jim Trolinger. A loss to the optics community.

Jim asked us to visit his home in 2018, where we spent the day talkng holography and optics. Later, Jim invited me to the Metrolaser labs, where we discussed a possible collaboration between Triple Take and Metrolaser. We determined that we'd continue the conversation, and the three of us - Jim, Joy and myself - met at the SPIE conference the following year. I'd told him I'd recorded a hologram - really, an inteferogram - of a car being simulated in a wind tunnel so you could see the aerodynamic properties of a car; a subject he was interested in. However, in the end, nothing came of it

He used to teach art, particular nude paintings. He asked me over to his house one evening, during one such art lesson, and showed me his stack of holograms, all stored in a cupboard. I asked him if his nudes were always women, and I think there would be an interest in women learning to paint nude men. He focused intently on me while smiling, and I said, "Don't look at me! I'd be a pretty bad representaion of males to be painted!"

Anyway, below, Jim, Pauline, Joy and myself in his garden in Costa Mesa.
